[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:14] Speaker B: Hello, welcome to the Roundhouse Rundown weekly glance at all things Shocker Athletics. Each week we'll give you a rapid fire listen on events coming up, promotions, ticket deals, a trivia question and a bit of Shocker history. Our guest Trivia Question reader is Denning Gehrig. Denning is Associate Director of Communications Broadcasting. Denning, hit us with the trivia Question. [00:00:37] Speaker A: This week's Trivia question which Wichita City League high school has produced the most all conference men's basketball Shockers including Missouri Valley Conference and American Athletic Conference? Is it A South High, B Heights High or C East High? [00:00:55] Speaker B: As always, I'm going to make you stick around to the end of this thing for the answer. I'm really proud of this trivia question so it will be worth the wait. Here we go with what's going on to Shocker Athletics Men's Basketball the Shockers are on a four game win streak after Sunday's win over number 14. Memphis. Shockers can shake up the top of the AAC this week with games against two of the teams tied for fourth. They are at Florida Atlantic on Thursday at 8pm on ESPN2. On Sunday, Tulane visits Koch arena for a 1pm game on ESPN. Both those teams are 84 in the AAC, a game back of North Texas and UAB and two behind Memphis. As always, those games are on 103.7 FM Sunday against Tulane. It's Youth Sports Day. You can contact the Shocker ticket office for a group rate. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Jersey Koozie presented by the Shocker Store. WSU women are coming off Saturday's win over Rice. They are on the road. They play at Temple on Wednesday and at Tulane on Saturday. They're back home March 1st against Charlotte. Weather is disrupting the Shocker softball schedule this week. Their tournament in Norman, Oklahoma is delayed. They are expected to play Saturday with the schedule to be determined. Shocker baseball heads to Hawaii, a throwback to an annual trip under Gene Stevenson. They play four against Hawaii starting Thursday and one against Chaminade. WSU opens its home schedule on February 28th versus Cal State Fullerton. Titans are back on the WSU schedule for the first time since 2016 and they make their first appearance in Wichita since 2014. WSU's women's tennis team is 44 in dual matches this spring and they're on a streak of three straight wins after defeating Kansas State, Oral Roberts and Kentucky. They're home this weekend. They play Memphis on Friday at 11am UT Arlington at 3pm Saturday. Those are both at the Wichita Country Club. Shockers play Iowa at 11am Monday at Genesis Rock Road. Shocker Women's bowling is coming off a tournament championship in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Last weekend they defeated number one Nebraska, number two Vanderbilt and number three Jacksonville State. They are at the Big Red Invite in Lincoln this weekend. Now here's Denning with a trivia answer. [00:03:07] Speaker A: Your trivia answer is C East High School with five Shockers who earned all conference honors. They are Cleo Littleton, Gary Thompson, Kelly Peet, Jamie Thompson and Terry Benton. Heights has three on that list, Aubrey Sherrod, Antoine Carr and Henry Carr. And who is the last City League athlete to earn all conference honors? That would be North High's Connor Frankkamp. [00:03:32] Speaker B: 2017 so Denning, you do baseball and bowling for Wichita State Athletics Put that bowling tournament into context for those of us who are still learning about this sport. [00:03:44] Speaker A: Well, it had essentially all of the teams that will end up in the national tournament, likely the Final Four. Based on the RPI rankings, this was the best tournament around in terms of the caliber of opposition. And Wichita State, despite not performing well the first two days in terms of a win loss record, had enough total pins to still be seeded in the top four heading into Sunday's bracket play, which gave them a chance at the championship. And then they beat the number one, number two and number three ranked teams to win the title. The context I would say to that is that shows that Wichita State is absolutely capable of winning a national championship. To beat that caliber of teams in that order on the same day is what you would have to do to win a national title and certainly shows the Wichita State is right there in that conversation. [00:04:42] Speaker B: And Jacksonville State won the NCAA bowling last year. Right. And then the Shockers defeated them in the in the other bowling tournament, the intercollegiate team championship. [00:04:51] Speaker A: That's right. [00:04:52] Speaker B: Yes, you traveled with baseball to McNeese State. Shockers lost Friday and Saturday, came back in one Sunday. What's your big takeaway from Shocker baseball over the weekend? [00:05:02] Speaker A: I would say for fans who didn't get a chance to see this team in any of the fall outside scrimmages or any kind of practices or anything like that. The thing that stood out to me was improved arm talent from a year ago, particularly as it pertains to the bullpen. I feel like Anthony Clagett and Brian Greene will have a lot more options down bullpen late in games to be able to piece things together. Injuries were certainly a factor for the position player group, but guys had to play a bunch of different spots they maybe normally wouldn't be accustomed to, and the Shockers were still able to get out of Lake Charles with a win. So not the worst weekend in the world. Obviously they would have liked to have won a series, but something to build on Heading off to Hawaii. [00:05:48] Speaker B: Thank you Denning. [00:05:49] Speaker A: Thank you Paul. [00:05:50] Speaker B: This week in Shocker history you could discuss whether or not this is the biggest game in the arena's history. I think people would agree this without a doubt the finest individual performance by a shocker. February 16, 1963 Ninth ranked shockers upset number one Cincinnati 65 64. Sophomore Dave Stallworth scores 46 points and the victory snaps a 37 game winning streak for the Bearcats. Cincinnati leads by six points with 3:10 to play before Stallworth scores all seven points to put the home team in front. Star Wars Final numbers From that game 14 of 22 from the field and 18 of 23 at the foul line. Thank you for listening.
